THE LEGITIMACY OF
THE ROYAL HOUSE OF GEORGIA
Introduction To The Royal House
The Bagrationi Dynasty was the ruling power of Georgia from the early middle ages to the 19th century. With the aid of the Bagrationi’s Georgia emerged from the middle ages as a powerful Christian state in the East. For Centuries this Dynasty protected the people of Georgia from domination by its Muslim neighbours. The Dynasty ruled Georgia until it was finally toppled by the Russian Empire.
The history of the Dynasty and that of Georgia are one and the same, even the Church has been heavily influence by the Royal House. The Dynasty provided the church with many Patriarchs, whom even to this day hold a special place in the political spectrum of Georgia.
After the family were moved to Russia they soon became one of the most powerful families in Russia, producing 3 distinguished generals and a number of politicians and scientist. During its enforced exile in Russia , the Mukhrani branch never renounced their claims to the Kingdom of Georgia and subsequently they carried on to be ‘de jure’ Kings of Georgia. Today The Royal House is headed by H.R.H. Davit Bagrationi Mukhrani Batonishvili (Crown Prince/Tsarevich), whom resides in Georgia.
Recognition from the Georgian Government and Orthodox Church
HRH Prince George was recognised by The Georgian Government as the Head of The Royal House at the protest of the rival claimants in 1991. Prince George along with the rest of his family where all accorded the title of ‘Batonishvili’ (Crown Prince/Tsarevich) , which is also within their Georgian passports.
Patriarch Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia has publicly called for the restoration of the Bagrationi dynasty, the Patriarch’s sentiments was supported by many of Georgia’s political parties. It should not be forgotten that this ancient dynasty provided the Church with more than four Patriarchs.
Relationship with The Imperial House of Russia
As stated earlier it was the Russian Imperial House that removed the Bagrationi dynasty from power, however twisted irony connected Grand Duke Vladimir to Princess Leonida Georgievna Bagrationi-Moukhransky. They were married on 13th August 1948. This was a significant recognition of the royal status and the equality of the Mukhrani branch among its royal peers in Europe. Russian Dynastic Law cleary states that a Prince of Imperial blood must marry someone of the same status (Ebenbuertigkeit , meaning someone of equal royal birth). This was stated in Articles 36 and 188 of the Russian succession laws . By marrying Princess Leonida, Grand Duke Vladimir in his compacity as the Head of the Imperial House confirmed and accepted the rights and privileges of The Royal House of Georgia.
Prince Irakly Bagrationi of Moukhrani married Infanta Maria de las Mercedes of Spain in 1946. The Infanta was a member of the Royal House of Spain at the time of the marriage, so in order to know the status of the Bagrationi family the father of bride Infante Ferdinand of Spain wrote to Grand Duke Vladimir. The Grand Duke replied that the marriage was an equal one and that Prince Irakly had the style of HRH and title of Prince of Georgia.
HRH Prince Davit married HRH Princess Anna Gruzinsky on the 8th February 2009 at the Tbilisi Sameba Cathedral. The wedding gained mass media attention as monarchist celebrated a step towards the rebirth to the monarchy in Georgia. The wedding was attended by some 3000 guest and thousands of Georgian citizen line the streets to show their support to the Royal Couple.
Within months of the marriage rumours have surfaced that the couple have divorced, this is however utterly false. The couple have been pictured at a number of high profile events since the rumours have surfaced.
Today as with many other Dynasties there are multiple claimants to the throne of Georgia, The Moukhrani branch and the Gruzinsky branch, the latter headed by Prince Nugzar.
The Moukhrani is the most senior branch of Dynasty, while the Gruzinsky branch is the junior branch. The Gruzinsky was the last to reign over two regions of Georgia, however it should be noted that Gruzinsky never reigned over Georgia in its current state. It was the senior branch of the Bagrationi Dynasty (which the Moukhrani decend from) that last reigned over Georgia as it is today and the Kingdom was called the United Kingdom of Georgia.
Currently Prince Nugzars heir is his daughter HRH Princess Anna (wife of HRH Prince Davit), this is against the traditions of Georgia succession laws as only males may ascend the Throne. Only if there are no other male dynast do females become eligible to inherit the throne. There are other male dynast so Prince Nugzar has no right to confer on his daughter the Throne. It is generally accepted that succession laws can only be changed by vote by the government of that country, Prince Nugzars branch is not reigning so he cannot change the laws that has governed Georgia’s Royal Succession for hundreds of years. Thus on the death of Prince Nugzar the Gruzinsky claim will automatically fall to the Moukhrani branch.
The birth of the Heir to the Georgian Throne, HRH Prince Giorgi Bagration Bagrationi has occured on September 27 2011, so he is to be considered and be raised as a possible candidate to rule Georgia as its King.
From what is stated in the rest of this essay it can be stated that the Head of the Royal House of Georgia is HRH Prince Davit of Georgia. Only he has the necessary skill and lineage to claim to be the Head of The Royal House of Georgia. The Gerogian government are fully aware of Prince Nugzar, but yet they continue to ignore his claim and recognize the claims of Prince Davit. In this the Georgian government have made it clear whom is the rightful heir to the Georgian Throne. Another obvious question which is yet to be answered is why it took the Prince so long to claim the Georgian Throne, and become a rival to the Moukhrani’s, surely he knew of their claims and existence before the Royal wedding.
Further more with the birth of an heir, it makes it clear that the Head of the Royal House of Georgia is Prince Davit accompanied by his wife Princess Anna.
